I was born in Haarlem in 1950 and in 1957 our family moved to Eindhoven. At 18, I was happy to leave school and went to the police school in Amsterdam. In 1974, I returned to the Brabant countryside and went to work in Helmond. I haven't left the region since and now live and work as a sculptor in Aarle-Rixtel.

From a young age, I have had a great affinity with materials, which exude a certain durability, solidity and strength, such as stone, hardwood, steel and the like. Even as a child, when visiting a church or other old building, I looked more at the marble and hard stone used than at its significance and architecture. Over the years, I became interested in art. My preference is for three-dimensional work. Pieces with a certain monumentality appeal to me a lot. Initially, it was the stonemason's craft that encouraged me to take up the chisel myself. By chiselling a lot in different types of stone, it became clear to me that harder types, such as marble, bluestone and granite, suit me better. And so the urge to discover, shape and create was born. Society in all its facets is so complex and so multifaceted that people and their environment are an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. Everything that grows and blooms, lives and moves continues to fascinate and challenge. As a sculptor, I am completely self-taught and follow my own feelings and experience. For me, a sculpture is successful if it evokes something of an emotion in the viewer.

workshop
Every Saturday I give a workshop sculpting in hard stone.
The day starts at 9.30 a.m. and ends at 4.30 p.m., after which it is time to tidy up and have a drink. At about 12.30, a fine lunch will be offered, which is included in the price. Work will be mainly in hard stone (bluestone) and various types of marble. You can bring your own stone (no soapstone), or buy from me from what I have in stock.

Tools

You will be provided with a set, consisting of several chisels, a fist hammer, and two rasps. In addition, you can of course bring your own tools. You can buy sandpaper from me. Use of electric hand tools only by arrangement. We work outdoors, so make sure you have adequate clothing. If it rains, we will set up 3 x 3 tents. In winter, the wood stove is on in the workshop. Safety glasses, gloves, dust and hearing protection are recommended. Everyone works at their own pace and according to their own ideas, and individually gets the attention they need from me.

Maximum 6 participants per workshop day, so lots of personal attention.

Cees' workshop is open every 1st and 3rd Saturday and Sunday of the month from 13.00-17.00. Besides Cees' work, there is also work by other artists on display. Also living in Aarle-Rixtel, Eef Wezenberg, has exhibited a large collection of optical crystal at Cees.
