Tough times for liberated South
Where liberation was expected to lead to a quick return to normal relations, the opposite proved to be the case. Liberated, but not yet peace. In the early days of September 1944, a quick and effortless liberation of the Netherlands seemed within reach, especially as the Allied advance had been so successful weeks before. When the front had moved up to the Belgian-Dutch border, the war machine began to falter. As a result, the liberation of the southern Netherlands ended in months of often bloody and devastating fighting. Society in the South was still disrupted for months by devastation, shortages and restrictions. Reconstruction, both economic and social, could only be dreamt of. The South was experiencing one of the most turbulent and dramatic periods in its history. Fewer and fewer eyewitnesses can still share the experience of what it was like to live in a partially liberated country. Jan van Oudheusden will sketch for interested parties the picture of the Southern Netherlands in those unpredictable months after the liberation of the South in a lecture to be attended free of charge.
