Macropedius was born in 1487 as Joris van Lanckvelt in Gemert. In the 16th century he was a famous schoolmaster, playwright and humanist. He made a career in Den Bosch, Liège and Utrecht. He became famous mainly for his plays. The play 'Hecastus' is a Latin adaptation of the medieval 'Elckerlyc' and was printed, translated and performed throughout Central Europe. An adaptation/translation of it is still performed every year during the Salzburg Festival!
