Help the birds in your garden with IVN Laarbeek
How wonderful it is, the activity of birds in your garden. Even the smallest garden or balcony knows where to find them, as long as there is something to eat. Sunflower seeds, peanuts, fat balls, they love them. Birds need protein and fat to get through the winter. And these foods are full of them. There is not much food left in the wild and between houses in winter. The days are short, the nights cold and long. Birds can lose as much as 10 per cent of their weight in a cold winter night. They have to gather that during the day. Hence the activity at a feeding site. And we humans can enjoy it again. Try hanging a silo of sunflower seeds on a branch. In no time, the birds will have found it. If you hang a silo, peanut butter box, peanut net and fat balls in different places, they will stay in your garden practically all day. Titmice, greenfinches, they eat their fill. Even the great spotted woodpecker and the nuthatch know how to find the smallest garden. Greenlings are real mess pots. Ground birds such as dunnocks, finches and pigeons benefit from this. Blackbirds love dried mealworms. Birds don't have much use for bread; bread contains very few nutrients. Drinking water is very important. Also hang up some nesting boxes. Birds use them not only for nesting but also as a warm and safe place to sleep. That way, your garden will be buzzing with life even on the coldest winter day.

Isn't it a nice idea to give someone a nesting box or peanut butter house as a gift with the upcoming holidays? At IVN Laarbeek you can buy them at a friendly price. Made by our own expert volunteers of the construction group. You then actually give three gifts in one: to the recipient, to the birds and to the IVN. Because the proceeds go entirely to the maintenance of the clubhouse De Bimd. You pay €10.00 for a nesting box, €7.00 for a peanut butter jar and €4.00 for a bumblebee box. You can visit the Bimd at Beekseweg 3 in Aarle-Rixtel on Wednesday mornings. You can also place an order via evenementenwerkgroep@ivnlaarbeek.nl.
