Javier Guzman in Ons Tejater

Saturday 22 October

Javier loved monkey bars. As a child, it was a joy to scramble, climb and play through the gymnasium. Monkey cages could never get boring and would remain a joyful part of his life forever. You would think that making jokes and pointed humour, topical and 'fresh off the street', would be his contemporary take on his beloved monkey cage. There is only one way to find out. Come and see!

"Monkey Caging" is a fun and challenging game in which participants have to move around a pre-built course while someone tries to tick them off. Build a course with all kinds of materials you can find. In a gymnasium this is of course easier because there is all kinds of gym equipment available such as climbing frames, bridges, wall bars, trestles, bench mats, springboards etc.

Monkey cage is played in the same way as tag. You are not allowed to touch the ground with your feet. A bit like 'the floor is lava'. Participants may only walk, jump or run from obstacle to obstacle. Anyone who touches the ground or is ticked off by the ticker is out.

Monkey cage is often dismissed as a 'dangerous game'. Often accidents have happened during earlier Monkey Cage games. The way in which the game is offered, the provision of sufficient escape routes, the omission of unsafe situations and the monitoring of safety during the game have often not received enough attention or have not been thought through well enough. If you don't like monkey cages, you can play the tap-less variant.
