These stream valleys were carved by large meltwater streams during the last and penultimate ice age. They are flanked by high sand ridges, which also formed during these ice ages. The stream could cause width erosion through meandering and at high water levels and eat into the edges of these cover sand ridges, creating a sharper steep-sided edge. Many of these steep ridges were also the product of farm labour. Farmers fertilised the fields with sods from the lowlands, mixed with manure from the potting shed, which, in a process of centuries, raised these fields. We also encounter such steep ridges during this walk.

The high cover sand ridges have been used as fields for centuries, right up to the present day. Due to intensive tillage, they are of little value ecologically, except for the land belonging to the organic horticultural farm present here. The brook valleys are of ecological value, especially the Schevelingse loop. In recent years, the Water Board has been paying increasing attention to this, for instance by creating ecological banks and pools. This time of year is particularly suitable for 'experiencing' this unique stream landscape. Naturally, we also pay attention to the flora and fauna. In short, it is definitely worthwhile to join us.

IVN Laarbeek lets young and old experience how fun, healthy and important nature is. The association wants nothing more than to go out with you in our nature, give you an enjoyable evening with interesting lectures or surprise you with entertaining events. Our association building is equipped for people who use wheelchairs. Check our website and facebook page regularly for updates: www.ivnlaarbeek.nl and www.facebook.com/IVNLaarbeek.
