Seniors' Association Beek en Donk will hold an art lecture on Leonardo da Vinci. He was an architect, inventor, engineer, philosopher, physicist, chemist, physician, sculptor, writer, poet and painter during the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy. He is considered the prime example of the Renaissance ideal of the homo universalis, the man who understood everything. But who was he really?
For all his talents, he was considered a controversial person who walked exclusively his own path, both artistically and personally. Clashes with ecclesiastical and noble patrons and colleagues like Michelangelo were therefore the order of the day. Not infrequently, he found himself embroiled in arguments and going to court. According to most biographers, his most striking trait was that he often started a commission enthusiastically, but then did not finish the work. New commissions in other places then got his full interest, as long as it lasted. Such was the case with the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, an equestrian statue for the Duke of Sforza and other of his works.
In a lecture, Beek and Donk art historian Dr Ger Jacobs will take a closer look at the eventful life and often enigmatic work of Leonardo da Vinci, a restless and sometimes toiling genius. The lecture will be held at in the Meeting Centre. Members pay €5.00 and non-members €6.50, which includes a cup of coffee or tea. Please register via the seniors' association's email address.
