The Lourdes grotto in Mariahout is a household word in Laarbeek and far beyond. Since the end of the 1930s, many pilgrims came on pilgrimage to the grotto on Mariahout's Mariastraat, with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The grotto is a copy of the Grotto of Massabielle in the place of pilgrimage Lourdes and was a great wish of parish priest Van Eijndhoven. After all, the Mariahout parish was dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. The statue in Mariahout looks out at the people from a height of about four metres. It is a copy of the original statue in Lourdes. It is about 180 centimetres high and made of French limestone. It is made of French limestone and completely in white, with a light blue band around her waist. The statue was made by the Eindhoven brothers Van Eck, who had a studio for religious art at Geldropseweg in Eindhoven. Behind the statue is the text: 'Je suis lmmaculee conception'. This means: 'I am the immaculate conception'. The Lourdes grotto partly collapsed in 1996, but the statue remained undamaged. It was, however, restored, at the same time as the reconstruction of the grotto in 1999.
