Heerlijck Vrij in Gemert-Bakel!
Welcome to Gemert-Bakel, Vrije Heerlijckheid in de Peel!
The origins of "Gemert-Bakel, Heerlijck Vrij" lie in its rich history: the area around Gemert had a specific sovereign status as Heerlijckheid from the beginning of the 13th century. This Heerlijckheid was characterised by various privileges and freedoms, such as religious freedom and other (freeer) legislation.
Particularly the (positive) feeling and the atmosphere (enjoy/Burgundian) of a Heerlijckheid are important in this respect. As part of the Teutonic Order, the area used to be a refuge for many, with an atmosphere of freedom. Trade also used to fall under this Heerlijckheid of which the castle is the most important physical legacy. Bakel and Milheeze were also a Heerlijckheid for a long time.
