The Feast of the Assumption will be celebrated again this year with a candlelight procession to the Lourdes Grotto.

The Feast of the Assumption will be celebrated again this year with a candlelight procession to the Lourdes Grotto.

Throughout the year, thousands of pilgrims come to Mary in the Lourdes Grotto. These pilgrims come from all over. They seek support, comfort and, above all, hope from Mary. On this feast day, Mary is honoured in the evening with a candlelight procession.

When the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes was founded (1933), there was a Marian procession on 15 August from the very beginning. The ceremony started at the grotto and went back to the Lourdes Grotto via the procession park. Later, when the grotto fell into disrepair, the tradition was continued with a Eucharistic celebration in the Open Air Theatre. After the reconstruction of the Lourdes grotto (1999), the grotto was fully reopened. The candlelight procession, as in Lourdes, was then incorporated into the celebration.

The Marian celebration takes place in the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. This is followed by a candlelight procession through the park and a closing ceremony at the Lourdes Grotto. There, the candles are placed on the large candlestick next to Mary. The candles for this procession are ready in the church. In case of bad weather, the celebration takes place in the church. Together with Yolanda Vos, well-known Marian songs are sung.
