The Henkus Trio performs a varied program of classical, jazz, and contemporary music in the Kouwenbergs Kerkje. With saxophone, bass clarinet, cello, guitar, and double bass, the three experienced musicians take a journey through time and across the world. Admission is free, but a voluntary contribution is appreciated.
Jo Hennen: soprano saxophone, bass clarinet, and cello. Jo Hennen (1958) studied classical saxophone and school music at the conservatory in Maastricht. After his studies, he played in the Limburg Saxophone Quartet, contemporary music in the ensemble Contraint, jazz in Bigband 77, commercial music in Die Flegel, and as a freelancer in numerous classical and jazz ensembles. Later, he studied cello with Wikkie Vis. As a teacher and band coach, he worked at Phoenix (Meierijstad) and Kunstkwartier (Helmond region), among others. In addition to teaching, Jo Hennen is currently active in the Eindhoven Symphony Orchestra and in Metjaq, a quartet that plays Arabic music.
Theo van den Hurk: electric guitar. Theo van den Hurk (1954) also studied at the conservatory in Maastricht: classical guitar and light music theory. Afterwards, he studied jazz under Ben Boogaard, among others. Van den Hurk played in various pop and jazz ensembles, such as Chapeau Claque and Phloxen. As a teacher, he wrote various guitar methods. In addition to guitar, Van den Hurk plays the Arabic lute: the oud. He took lessons for this with Nizar Roehana. Van den Hurk also plays in the Arabic quartet Metjaq.
Toon Kessels: double bass Toon Kessels (1951) is self-taught. Starting as a guitarist with Jazz Express, he switched to bass guitar. Subsequently, he played double bass in Blue Note and as a freelancer in other jazz ensembles. As a classical double bassist, he played in the Helmond Orchestra Association, Chamber Orchestra Alveare, Salon Orchestra Prelude, and with the Bach Cantatas Tilburg Foundation, among others. He is currently focusing on contemporary music with the ensemble CoMA Eindhoven.
