Exploring the Peel Boundary Fault

The Peelrandbreuk, or Peel Boundary Fault, runs right through Land van de Peel. It is a geological fault line in the subsoil. It runs roughly from Roermond via Deurne, Bakel and Gemert to Heesch. The fault has shaped the Peel landscape. You can see it in wet soils, rust-coloured water and differences in height.

Did you know?

  • Wijst soils lie along the Peelrandbreuk. These are elevated, marshy areas. Here, iron-rich groundwater rises to the surface as seepage. This wijst phenomenon is a special natural feature of south-east Brabant.
  • In the Vlierpark in Deurne, close to the Haageind castle estate, the fault is marked. A long row of ornamental apple trees by artist Roberto Ruggiu traces the fault line.
  • Farmer Henk of Bijzonder Brabants in Deurne knows all about the Peelrandbreuk. The fault runs right through his vegetable garden, where he has made it visible. Join one of his guided tours to find out more.
  • Thanks to the Peelrandbreuk, fossils millions of years old have come to the surface. You can see several of them in the permanent exhibition De Peel aan Zee (The Peel by the Sea). It is at Museum Klok & Peel in Asten.
