Brewery manager’s house

On the corner of Hemel and Emmastraat stands the former premises of De Hoop Brewery – later known as Astein Eijsbouts’ Brewery and Mineral Water Factory. That name lives on in the current drinks shop.

The history of this building dates back to 1674, when it was already home to weighmaster Renerus van Geldrop. After passing through the hands of various owners, it came into the possession of Theodorus (Tidder) Eijsbouts, a farmer and brewer. He had the building rebuilt in 1877 and founded the De Hoop brewery. His son Jan continued the business, followed by his grandson Thé, who renamed the brewery ‘Astein’ in 1941.

The residential part of the building was rebuilt in 1930, but behind the building – on Emmastraat – the original brewery is still recognisable. Beer production ceased for good in 1950. This striking listed building serves as a tangible reminder of the history of the breweries in Asten.
