Asten’s oldest house

The old vicarage on Lindestraat is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Asten. The oldest part of the house dates from the late 16th century and was extended in 1751. This is still visible in the wall anchors at the rear.

From 1748, the priest lived in the house next to the barn church of Our Lady of Linde. The presbytery later also became the property of the Catholic parish and remained so until 1807. When the Catholics regained their main church on Koningsplein in 1798, the religious centre of the village shifted once again. The barn church was demolished and the vicarage was sold to the Reformed congregation. From 1807 to 1881, the property served as the minister’s residence. After that, the minister moved to a more comfortable house in Burgemeester Wijnenstraat (then still known as Molenstraat).

The house was subsequently occupied by various families. The cellar is said to be quite remarkable, with low square doors and beautiful vaults. However, very few people have had the chance to see it. The vicarage is a listed building and one of the few old buildings still standing in Asten. Together with the wall of the barn church, it forms a valuable piece of history.
