The local artists' greatest wish was to have a large exhibition space where they could display a lot of their work. When the GOO foundation's office in the former Ds Swildensschool became available, a space was found. Five people took the initiative to set up a board, and the Gemert-Bakel Museum Foundation was able to get started right away. On Saturday, June 7, the museum, now renamed MUG, was opened to the public by Mayor Michiel van Veen and Alderman Coppens. Wilmie Steeghs, the alderman for culture who had been a strong advocate for a museum, was unfortunately unable to attend. It was a big celebration, with more than 120 people attending the opening. A good start is half the battle. Sixty artists exhibited their work in the new museum. The work was distributed throughout the building by the curator team led by Karin Snijders. Everything had been given a beautiful place.
