Former ‘Maria Schoot’ convent
For several centuries, the ‘Maria Schoot’ convent stood on the grassy area between the two streets, near Kloosterstraat 8. It was founded in 1539 by Marieke van de Goor. It remained in use as a convent until 1732, after which it was converted into a residential house and provided accommodation for several families. The last remaining part of the convent, dating from 1629, was destroyed in 1922 by a fierce fire, leaving the families of Lambert Berkvens and Antonius van Bussel homeless. It burned to the ground.
