Symbolism;
The five linked columns symbolize the five war years and the five nationalities of the Allies. The broken memorial plaques symbolize the lives of the war victims who were abruptly ended. The fifth column represents the future; don't let this record break. Tolerance is the beginning of peace and freedom. Even now, we must be alert to signs in society that endanger our freedom and tolerance.

The monument of the Old East Indies Foundation is integrated on the side of the left column. This bronze shield was placed on the facade of the town hall in 1998 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the decision of the Dutch government to act militarily in the Dutch East Indies.
