De Halte

Peat district past  The Halte area, embedded between the Toon Kortoomspark and the peat village of Griendtsveen is an area of cultural historical value. In the times when peat cutters were active here, the site was home to a railway station. The ‘black gold’ (the peat and the mull) were ‘shipped’ from here and sent all over Europe. The area was named after the railway station that was built here around 1868. In time, the station's surroundings were also indicated as the ‘Halte’, Dutch for ‘stop’. This place in the Peel still breathes the atmosphere of olden times.

Foundation of mull factory  In the nearby Toon Kortoomspark you can truly experience the Peel; memorabilia from the life and work of Toon Kortooms take you back to days of the past, while the barefoot path allows you to discover the Peel with all your senses. At the very end of the birch tree path lie the foundations of the old mull factory and the remnants of the old peat shed of Kortooms’ father.
Halte walking tours This area has nice walking routes as well. Short walking routes have been set out in the Halte walking area of the Deurne Peel. Start at the parking lot at Griendtsveenseweg, near the Toon Kortooms park. Follow the yellow (1 km), red (2.5 km) or blue signs (3.5 km) of the Forestry Commission.
