The statue was placed in that very spot after the redesign of the 'green lung' in front of the town hall on Koppelstraat in 2009. De Ontmoeting symbolises the connection between the Music Garden on the other side, the municipal park and the adjacent park. For artist Wim Heesakkers, The Meeting is also a symbol of meeting and dialogue in equality of the inhabitants of the four village centres of Laarbeek and the municipality. The two people on the pedestal are identical, which indicates the equality among the people. When the artist received the commission, he looked at the design and at the materials he wanted to use. The Lieshout artist makes sculptures from various materials, but for De Ontmoeting he chose layered corten steel. But from the design to the final product, things can change. At the start you don't know where it's going. The figures are 150 centimetres high and stand on a 110-centimetre plinth, so they look high over everyone. They are always two plates standing at a short distance from each other.
