The aldermen made a sad passage, to the Hofgoed, in the Schoolstraatje. There Martinus Herman, known to everyone in Gemert as Friar Martinus, plunged into his own well. Willemijn Verhallen, who also rents a room in the Hofgoed, heard screams the previous evening, near midnight. "Heej, heej," was shouted in a loud guttural voice. A moment later the poor fellow was standing at the back door. Willemijn got up and asked him where he wanted to go.
‛You must not comply with me, or I will do this and that to you.'
He walked out, toward the well. Willemijn ran to the neighbors, but it took her a while to drum them out of bed. Finally, three neighbors walked with her. Brother Martinus was indeed in the well. With the well hook they pulled the body up slightly, so that they could at least keep the friar above water. When a fourth neighbor joined the small group, they brought the body to the surface with combined efforts. It was clear that Brother Martinus was beyond life, and they lifted him up and took him to his home.
