Helmond Castle
The castle was built in the fourteenth century; the first building activities probably took place between around 1325 and 1350. For centuries, the castle was inhabited by the Lords of Helmond (families Berlaer, Cortenbach, Arberg and Wesselman). In 1922, the castle was repurposed into a town hall, based on a design by J. W. Hanrath. Nowadays, it houses the municipal museum, as well as some municipal functions such as a council chamber and a wedding chamber.
The original water castle has a rectangular courtyard surrounded by three wings. In the corners, you will find round housing towers (or keeps) sticking out with seventeenth century peaks. The northern wing wasn’t built until the sixteenth century. The southern outer wall used to be equipped with a draw bridge.

Of the two original moats, only the inner moat around the building itself remains. The surrounding park also used to be a lot bigger, but as a result of Helmond’s development as an industrial town and the construction of the Traverse Highway, its surface consistently shrunk.
