Art: The Fallen Human
This bronze war memorial by artist Annemarie Leenders-Kusters was unveiled in 1968 to honor all the fallen of Asten during World War II. The artist was inspired by the Battle of the Peel, in which many women and children died. The fallen woman symbolizes all war-related suffering—not just the loss, but also the pain and misery caused by war. In the woman’s belly is a cavity that becomes a birdbath after rainfall, symbolizing the continuation of life. It also commemorates Mayor Wijnen, who was shot by the Germans in 1944. In 2008, the monument was restored, and plaques were added listing all Asten's fallen in WWII and former Dutch East Indies. The statue was also placed lying on the ground, in accordance with the artist’s original wish. It is one of the first art castings by Royal Eijsbouts Bell Foundry.
