Public walk Green Lung

IVN holds a public walk through the Groene Long.

The guides of IVN Laarbeek take you for a walk through the Groene Long of Beek en Donk. That is a beautiful park, located between the nuclei of Donk and Beek, in a stream valley. It is a wetland area with large trees, woodland plants and lawn. It forms an ecological connecting zone between the South Willemsvaart and the Goorloop, a green strip that was once a swampy plain. The Music Garden and Laarbeek Town Hall are located in this area.

The guides will let you enjoy what nature has to offer here. The walk is partly on semi-paved paths and follows a large part of the Bird Nature Trail. Everywhere there are signs to tell you something about nature. The Green Lung is home to both native and non-native trees, shrubs and flowers. The ponds and water features increase biodiversity in this unique part of Beek en Donk. Water from the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal, rainwater from the Beekse Akkers and local seepage water all contribute to water management. In recent years, rainwater drains from surrounding neighbourhoods have been constructed here and there to improve the flow. The park is home to many species of birds, with quite a few geese in recent years. The kingfisher breeds there regularly, the nuthatch, green and great spotted woodpecker are regular residents. And of course, you will see and hear titmice everywhere and perhaps also the black-headed chiffchaff.

The walk starts at the Park Pavilion.
