Nature and hiking reserve The Groot Goor
The Groot Goor is a forest and nature reserve to the east of Mierlo-Hout. The center area is 30 hectares in size and belongs to the city of Helmond.
The area borders the built-up area of Mierlo-Hout to the west, a park and the built-up area of Helmond to the north, an industrial zone and the South William’s Canal to the east and the Eindhoven Canal to the south. The Goorloop flows through the area.
In the past, part of the reserve was used as a landfill.

The Groot Goor is a forest and nature reserve to the east of Mierlo-Hout. The center area is 30 hectares in size and belongs to the city of Helmond.
The area borders the built-up area of Mierlo-Hout to the west, a park and the built-up area of Helmond to the north, an industrial zone and the South William’s Canal to the east and the Eindhoven Canal to the south. The Goorloop flows through the area.
In the past, part of the reserve was used as a landfill.
The area is made up by some reed lands, meadows, a vast apple orchard and an old and varied wet forest area between the Eindhoven Canal the built-up area of the city of Helmond. The northern part consists of a beech forest. Some of the summer birds include the lesser spotter woodpecker, the nightingale, the golden oriole and the little owl.
The reserve is very popular as a hiking area.
The area is potentially threatened by the urbanization, with the reserve being surrounded by built-up areas on three sides.
