The oldest known mention of Someren dates from 1212. In a deed from the archives of the Abbey of Postel, 'Sumeren' is mentioned. In other old archive documents, Someren turns up under various names, for example as 'Zomeren' or 'Zoemeren'. The origin of the name Someren is 
explained in various ways. Some look for the name derivation in so/ soe (=water) – ma (=land) – ren (=border). 

Writings from before 1300 refer to 'Summerin' which means summer brook. According to yet another source, Someren owes its name to the fact that the brook 'de Aa' originates here from 'Seven Moeren'.

In the past, the municipality of Someren had no less than seven fens. With an area of ​​85 hectares, the Beuven on the Lieropse Heide is the largest fen in the Netherlands and is known for being rich in birds and has very special vegetation. 

This tour through the 'Land van Zeuve Meeren' not only leads you through the centers of Lierop, Someren-Dorp, Someren-Eind and Someren-Heide, but also through the natural part of the municipality and along a large number of the Somerense fens.
