Public walk with IVN through De Biezen

until 21 April

IVN Laarbeek is holding an early bird walk through De Biezen. Experienced guides will tell you about bird life in this nature reserve. You will learn to recognise bird sounds. Hopefully you will also be able to see various species. Therefore, bring good field glasses.
De Biezen is a varied area with woods, meadows and water, managed by the Forestry Commission. The road from the Brabantse kluis towards Grotelse Heide cuts it into two parts. To the left, follow the sandy path past rich thickets and open meadows to the Bruggenpad, where the Snelle Loop forms the border between Aarle-Rixtel and Gemert. It is an ecological linking zone. Cascades, large boulders and pieces of wood provide improved regulation: in dry times water is retained longer, in wet periods it can be drained faster.

De Biezen is a varied area with woods, meadows and water, managed by the Forestry Commission. The road from the Brabantse kluis towards Grotelse Heide cuts it into two parts. Cascades, large boulders and pieces of wood provide improved regulation: in dry times water is retained longer, in wet periods it can be drained faster.

On the right side of the road, De Biezen is a forest area with poplar plantation, oak woodland and trouser woodland. There are beautiful transitions from swamp forest to dry forest, to sparse and flowery grasslands, which appear as 'islands' in the area. There are narrow paths, sometimes with wooden bat bridges, through the forest. On the path towards the former forester's house, you soon hear the sound of the nuthatch in the tall, mostly older trees. To the sides are several trees with woodpecker holes. Not surprising as both the great spotted, middle spotted and lesser spotted woodpecker have been observed here. Around mid-April, the cuckoo also returns. With some luck, the yellowhammer will let its musical tune be heard, especially in sunny weather. Hope it will be an enjoyable, bird-rich walk!
