Lecture ‘Brabant is his own land’

In the sixteenth century, Brabant was an important and prosperous region within the Netherlands. The Dutch Revolt and the Eighty Years' War brought this to an end. Subsequently, Brabant was treated by the Republic as conquered territory and governed directly from The Hague.

Political equality was not achieved until the end of the eighteenth century. After that, Brabant gradually managed to catch up and develop into a province with a strong and self-confident character. In this lecture, Jan van Oudheusden discusses the changing role of Brabant within the Netherlands and how generations of Brabanders have dealt with this. Jan van Oudheusden was the provincial historian of North Brabant for many years and affiliated with Tilburg University. He has published various books and articles on the history and heritage of ’s-Hertogenbosch and North Brabant. In 2014, he received the provincial award De Hertog Jan. The lecture will be held at De Couwenbergh.
