IVN Laarbeek, led by experienced guides, organises a public walk that takes you along and through the stream valleys of the Schevelingse Loop and the Goorloop.
These stream valleys were carved out by large meltwater streams during the last and penultimate ice ages. They are flanked by high sand ridges. Meandering and high water levels caused lateral erosion, which created sharp steep edges that are still visible in the landscape. The soil of the old farmland near the Antoniushoeve, where organically grown vegetables are sold, still contains flints. In the past, these were used as scrapers or knives. Manure from the pot stables was spread over the iron-rich sediments of the stream valleys and mixed with heather sods. This created nutritious soil. From these high-lying fields, you descend to the low-lying land along the Schevelingse Loop, where you walk through a forest of old willows and oaks. Here and there, the banks have been flattened to create drinking places for animals and pools have been created. This area is a gem in the landscape, where horses graze, many aquatic animals thrive and kingfishers feel at home. Of course, we also have an eye for the flora and fauna. In short, it is definitely worth going on a walk here. Sturdy waterproof shoes or boots are usually no luxury. Enjoy your walk!
