National monument. Former shop with two dwellings and stables, now used as a restaurant with living quarters. Building with an old core that was modernised around 1900 in traditional craftsmanship style and is located in the centre of Asten, on the corner of Marktstraat, Julianastraat and Kleine Marktstraat.
Description.
Single-storey building on a rectangular floor plan under a gable roof, the ridge of which runs parallel to Julianastraat. The building is largely plastered, with a chequered finish and corner pilasters. The rear section is constructed of hand-moulded brick and has a mouse tooth and a plastered plinth. The roof is covered with hollow tiles and has a gutter cornice on Julianastraat. The end façade on Marktstraat has arched T-windows on the ground floor and in the gable, set in a plastered frame with crests. The side façade has the same windows. In the middle of the side façade on Julianastraat is a door with rectangular windows on either side. This is set in a plastered frame. To the right of this is a T-window, as in the front façade. In the rear section of the side façade are two round-arched gates. To the left of the leftmost one is a rusticated pilaster, to the right a smooth pilaster strip. There is an arched window. The end façade at Kleine Marktstraat 4 has a lowered door and several windows, including a four-pane window in the gable. The gable is crowned by a wind brace.
The rear façade has a single extension and has been newly plastered. The extension is recent and is not covered by national heritage protection.
Appraisal.
The building is of general importance because of its cultural-historical value as a special expression of socio-economic and typological development. The building is also important because of its preserved original residential/work function. The exterior has been well preserved.
