Former Chapel of Our Lady
Jan van Haven, a seafarer, found himself in distress and prayed for help. When his prayers were answered, he vowed to build a chapel in Ommel. And so it came to pass. At the starting point of the walking route, on what is now O.L.V. Square, a Roman Catholic chapel was consecrated in 1444; see the 17th-century drawing of it. The statue of the Virgin Mary was given a prominent place within it. The chapel was rebuilt several times and, by 1900, had developed into a parish church with a tower (see old photograph). During the Second World War, the church was so badly damaged by shelling that it had to be demolished. The parish then held services in a temporary church until 1963, when they were able to move into the present parish church.
