The Freedom Monument in Someren consists of five pedestals, on which five different abstract elements have been placed. The pedestals consist of masonry supplemented with black terrazzo, which in turn transitions into layers of lighter stone.
Symbolism;
The pedestals symbolize shelling and bombing. In a natural way this will be associated with deprivation of liberty and with the emotional violence of war. The color difference in the pedestals forms the basis for the main idea of this work, namely 'freedom recaptured'. The freedom of individual thinking, feeling and belief. The abstract elements on the pedestals are different, but they still form a unit. They can move under the influence of the wind, but in the wind they will each make their own movement. They illustrate the idea of freedom: 'being able to be yourself, with your own appearance, with your own thoughts and with your own faith, and to be able to live in a climate of tolerance.' Or in the words of Rosa Luxemburg: 'Freedom is always the freedom of those who think differently'.
