Castle remains Asten-Heusden
On the edge of the Peel, hidden behind lush vegetation, lie the romantic remains of the more than 600-year-old castle of Asten. The idyllic ruin evokes an eventful past of mining, wars and witch persecution. The last war caused the castle to be fatal, in 1944 an attack on the castle took place in which the building was turned into a ruin. The castle may have collapsed, but the outer castle is still there in its full glory and has been inhabited continuously for the centuries that it has existed. Until the seventies of the last century they were farms and today it houses up to fifty people. Now and then there is a stork.
