An impressive documentary: ‘The Castle of the Spiritinians’.

This time, Heemkundekring Barthold van Heessel has opted for a film/documentary instead of the usual lecture. The film was made by Nijmegen filmmakers Nelleke Dinnissen and Paul van Laere.

Het Slot van de Spiritijnen sketches a penetrating portrait of the last years of the Congregation of the Holy Spirit at the castle in Gemert. For over a century, the castle was their home base, from which hundreds of young missionaries left for Africa and Brazil. The documentary shows not only daily life inside the monastery walls, but also the work in the mission fields and the return of the fathers after their tropical years. Particular attention is paid to the last 17 residents of the lock: a unique generation that lived through the profound religious upheavals of the 1960s and redefined their mission ideals, with a strong focus on social and economic development. The film also shows the pain of parting: the final departure from the castle and the closing of an important chapter in Gemert's history. The screening will take place at De Couwenbergh in Aarle-Rixtel.
