Interactive QR-route around the castle site

(1.0 km)

On the edge of the Peel, hidden behind lush vegetation, lie the romantic remnants of the more than 600-year-old castle of Asten. The idyllic ruin evokes a turbulent past of land reclamation, wars, and witch persecutions. The castle met its fate during the last war; in 1944, it was the target of an attack that reduced it to a ruin. Though the main castle was destroyed, the outer bailey still stands in all its glory and has been continuously inhabited throughout the centuries. Until the 1970s, it housed farms, and today it is home to fifty residents.
