'We have it good, but we also worked hard for it,' Father Alexander is fond of saying. The family has little compassion for the less fortunate in this country: 'Whoever is poor in the Netherlands is doing something wrong themselves,' said Charlotte. 'You make your own luck.'
1944: Operation "Market Garden" has begun although it is going slowly and the fear of failure is great. In the house live a mother, Edith Berkvens, with her two sons: Daniel and Anton.
Her brother Jonas lies in a bed in the corner; he lost his sight in an explosion.
Father David had ties to the resistance and was shot off his bicycle one day.
Since then the four of them have been surviving, afraid of vengeful Nazis, afraid that liberation will come too late....
Two families: a family that has everything and finds nothing strange about this, and a family that has lost everything and daily fears for their lives. In the same house, in different time periods but those periods are about to merge with each other.
In the "now," Charlotte starts having trouble sleeping: The steel multinational where she works is making morally questionable choices and she doesn't know what to do. Alexander is accused of plagiarism and Annabelle discovers a secret from her direct competitor and Arnaud becomes the center of a riot when he posts an erroneous comment online.
The van Gils family's existence falters and all four face a moral dilemma. Plagued by worry, all four become lonely, and in their isolation they find themselves in conversation with the shadows of the past:
Alexander is visited in the night by the echo of Jonas.
Charlotte meets Edith in the shadows of her bedroom.
Arnaud and Annabelle also get into conversation with their counterparts from the past: People who had nothing, and yet had to try to draw hope from somewhere.
The family from the past also comes under great pressure when a wounded Allied soldier knocks on the door for help, while the Germans are on his trail.
Present and past blend together as the fighting around "The House" intensifies in 1944.
The House 44-24 is a family story about moral dilemmas, and about privilege versus adversity. About the inability to see what you HAVE, and about the strength to protect it when it is in danger. A story about how much we are alike and about what makes us, ultimately, human.
